The BetaList submission

Last week was pretty exciting for CoinBlick. On Friday, the 12th of April, I got an email from BetaList that CoinBlick got featured on their website and that it will be shown on their front page for the whole day. Those were pretty awesome news since I was waiting for already 3 weeks to get the CoinBlick submission approved. Here’s how the BetaList website looked at that day:

CoinBlick on BetaList

BetaList is a website with 250k monthly visitors where people can submit their Startups to get first users or to get their beta version tested. Since CoinBlick was already running a beta at the beginning of the year, the intention behind this was basically to get first users. The submission is free, but if you don’t want to wait for it to get published you can pay a fee of $129 to accelerate the process.

Finally on Product Hunt

Coming back to the main topic, our Product Hunt launch, which happened last Monday, the 15th of April. This one was even more exciting since Product Hunt is the best source for a young project to get the first users and feedback. I was pretty excited since there’s also a huge intersection between Product Hunt users and Cryptocurrency investors.

This would definitely bring CoinBlick to a major audience.

The days before the launch

Prior to that, I was investigating the best practices for posting on Product Hunt and realized that there might be a correlation between the success of a submission to its hunter. The “Hunter” is the person that actually posts the new product on PH. Besides that, there’s a “Maker” role for the person that made it. So I decided to reach out to prominent Hunters including Bram Kanstein, the most successful (in terms of upvotes) Hunter ever existed on PH.

This was the mail I sent him:

Mail to Bram Kanstein

I was pretty nervous, but I focused on the main pain point I want to solve with CoinBlick and a little bit of background. A few days passed and I didn’t hear anything from him. What I absolutely didn’t want is that someone else hunts my app on PH. That would give someone else the control of my marketing timeline, and that brings you in a very uncomfortable situation. So I decided to already create the submission, but schedule it for later. Since my Product Hunt submission was scheduled for Monday I gave myself a deadline so that I would post it myself if Bram (or any other important Hunter) would not answer. The time was running and I wanted it to be done sooner than later. What I didn’t know: Once you scheduled your submission, you can’t delete it or postpone it more than 7 days. 😱

The day of the launch

On Monday the submission was scheduled for 04:00 AM Pacific Time. One hour prior to that Bram Kanstein unexpectedly answered my email with the following content: “Cool! I can post you on Product Hunt.”. I was totally overwhelmed! I tried to delete my submission so that he can actually submit it, but… this was not possible.

Since I didn’t have another possibility I let it go and CoinBlick launched at PH. I quickly answered Bram and asked him politely if he were open to tweet about it. And he did it! 😍

Crazy! This gave me such a boost. But this was not all. Also, Ovi Negrean, a known Speaker and Founder of SocialBee with over 36k followers tweeted about CoinBlick:

Absolutely overwhelming. I was on fire 🔥. Besides the usual sharing on social media, what I did is also to share it to friends and colleagues. I asked all of them to upvote on PH and also to share it with their friends. Of course, you can annoy some people with that, especially when they’re working, but you can also incentivise them with sweets, dates or beers 😜.

This was also the first time I tried Twitter Ads for something. After a few hours passed, I looked at the PH page again and could not believe my eyes. My app had already 300+ upvotes, which was really amazing. To celebrate this a bit, I decided to post it on Twitter and Facebook. While creating the tweet the idea to run some ads on it came into my mind. I decided to give it a try and created 3 tweets and ran them after each other. The first one was pretty informal and didn’t convert good, so I create another two that were more eye-catching. Results:

The days after the launch

The Product Hunt launch ended on the first day with approximately 480 Upvotes, which was pretty unexpected and awesome. I was also really happy to get some reviews by users that were actually using CoinBlick for a few weeks already. Later that day I received the daily Product Hunt newsletter where CoinBlick got featured as well:

Product Hunt Newsletter

Unfortunately, I did not become the product of the day for some reason. This was very strange since I got the most upvotes.

The next thing to do was of course to analyze all the traffic and conversion that happened that day. For everyone who has an iOS App in the App Store, this is not new, but for everyone else, you should know that the analytics are delivered with a delay of 2–3 days. But I had my in-app analytics and they were pretty amazing. Most of the customers came from the USA, which is my main market since it’s the country with the most Cryptocurrency Users:

App Usage by Region

As of writing, CoinBlick has more than 600 Upvotes on Product Hunt and I can say that I’m pretty satisfied with the results. The question is now what comes next?

The next chapter

I will, of course, continue pushing the marketing for CoinBlick. Last time I was also talking about building a community. This will of course continue. Speaking of development, I will soon continue on the Android version of CoinBlick. My newsletter for Android sign-ups is growing. That shows me there’s is definitely some interest.
