In the dynamic world of technology, resilience is the key to survival. Huawei, China’s tech titan, is a testament to this. Despite a U.S. ban that nearly obliterated its consumer electronics business, Huawei is plotting a return to the 5G smartphone industry by the end of this year, according to research firms. This signals a potential comeback, a phoenix rising from the ashes of adversity.

Huawei’s journey has been a rollercoaster ride. Once competing with Apple and Samsung for the title of the world’s biggest handset maker, the company found itself in a precarious position when U.S. restrictions, beginning in 2019, cut off its access to essential chipmaking tools for its advanced models. The U.S. and European governments labeled Huawei a security risk, a charge the company vehemently denies.

However, Huawei is not one to back down easily. The company is expected to procure 5G chips domestically, using its own advances in semiconductor design tools and chipmaking from Semiconductor Manufacturing International Co (SMIC), according to three third-party technology research firms. This is akin to a homegrown solution, a testament to Huawei’s resilience and innovation.

The return to the 5G phone market would mark a significant victory for Huawei, which has been in “survival” mode for almost three years. The company’s consumer business revenue peaked at 483 billion yuan ($67 billion) in 2020, before plummeting by almost 50% a year later. The Shenzhen-based tech giant’s potential comeback is a beacon of hope for its stakeholders.

However, the road to recovery is not without its challenges. The forecast yield rate of usable chips is below 50%, limiting 5G shipments to around 2 million to 4 million units. Moreover, U.S. restrictions have cut Huawei off from Google’s Android operating system and the bundle of developer services upon which most Android apps are based, limiting Huawei handsets’ appeal outside of China.

Despite these hurdles, Huawei seems determined to rise again. The company could produce 5G versions of flagship models like the iPhone rival P60 this year, with new launches likely in early 2024. As the world watches, Huawei’s phoenix moment is unfolding.
