HODL is actually a misspelled version of “hold”, and there is an interesting story about how it became one of the most used terms in every crypto-related discussion.
How it all began — History of HODL
On December 18, 2013, a Bitcoin forum member with the username or handle “GameKyuubi” shared an interesting opinion on the forum.
Now, 2013 was a big year for crypto traders. The price of Bitcoin had surged from $15 at the start of the year to over $1,100 close to the end of the year. Due to the highly volatile nature of the industry, it dropped to $438 in mid-December of that same year. Some traders were frustrated and lost millions. Except for GameKyuubi, In a post, he wrote, “I AM HODLING”.
The “I AM HOLDING” post was a response to the price plunge. The post had typos and was written in all caps to express the author’s firmness in his beliefs. The misspelled HODL quickly started trending, and eventually, there became a vast gallery of memes with that exact spelling of Hold on the internet. Somewhere along the line, HODL started signifying Hold on for dear life.
