I finally discovered the true purpose of NFTs.
The true power of NFTs is that it is a gateway drug to Web3
One day when the dust settled and crypto winter is over, maybe we will ask ourselves this: how many of you actually started your journey into crypto and web3 because of NFTs?
Whether you love, hate or don’t care about NFTs, you have to admit, they have taken the world by storm in the last 2 years.
From digital monkeys to pandas, racoons, burritos, poodles, balloons, dogs, cats, flies, celebrities and even scribblings, NFTs come in all shapes and sizes.
Literally.
You cannot think of one original NFT idea now if you tried really hard.
NFT exploded into the scene like Furbies did in the 1990s.
If you don’t know what’s a Furby, google it and learn something new today.
You’ll thank me later.
NFTs have created companies worth billions.
Entire ecosystems of startups, artists, programmers, community builders, players and so on have been manifested almost magically around NFTs.
Just take a look at what Yuga Labs did with their NFT collection BAYC, which turned into a whole metaverse game, raising $450M and rocking the entire crypto world while at it.
Notice the entire generation of youth investors and traders who couldn’t tell you how to use a washing machine, but can show you how to flip NFTs on Magic Eden and OpenSea for thousands of dollars.
They didn’t learn about tokenomics in the classroom.
They didn’t sit through semesters of lectures to understand blockchain, proof of stakes and sharding.
They didn’t need to.
They started with NFTs and let their imagination roam wherever their interests take them.
Perhaps that is the true power of NFTs in modern society.
It is the gateway drug to Web3.
Sure, you may hate how much scams and phishing there is going around.
And yes, Doge, BTC and many other coin prices all move to Elon’s tweets.
Of course, there are plenty of hype, fury, disappointments and shills floating around.
You may have came for NFTs, hoping to cop a good jpeg to flip.
Or listened to a podcaster or influencer tell you to buy that Mechanized Pomelo Airhead NFT collection.
But you will stay for the community, technology and promise it holds for the future.
Call a spade a spade.
For most of us, NFTs is just a gateway drug.
A simplified mechanism to enter the bizarre, wild world of crypto.
A mere magical pearly white door with bright neon signs on top to suck us in and nudge us to take the first step into web3.
Our journey was never meant to end at NFTs.
Some of us will get burnt, get rekt, get scammed and get slapped in the face.
But we will learn, reconfigure out brain cells and keep moving forward.
There is so much more to web3 than just NFTs.
There’s the metaverse, gamefi, defi, infrastructure and so on.
You can be a player, a collector, a trader, a builder, a programmer, a community manager, an artist, a discord champion, a lurker or even a hater.
Web3 is freedom, and you are free to do whatever you like.
Just don’t harm others or yourself.
