What’s the bitcoin halving?

The bitcoin halving is a mechanism by which the amount of bitcoin released into circulation is cut in half every four years.

You see, bitcoin has a fixed supply of 21 million and there’s no central issuer of bitcoin like a government or central bank. So, participants in the bitcoin network run software on computers via a process called bitcoin mining. Roughly every 10 minutes, miners validate transactions on the bitcoin network and add them to the public ledger called the blockchain. Every time miners do this, they earn something called the block reward.
