The Current Market

It could be another significant week for cryptocurrency, according to Tammy Da Costa, an analyst for DailyFX, who noted on Saturday that reports on American manufacturing and employment are coming this week and may have an impact on central bankers’ financial regulations. “Technically, a hold below $21,000 and below the bearish flag’s lower bound at about $20,300 could cause price action to return to the July low of $18,905, with the June low then coming into play at $17,592.” According to data from Coinglass, the last two Fridays have been difficult ones for the cryptocurrency market, with the most recent one seeing the liquidation of $288 million in equities. The most realized gains since June 13th, were liquidated on August 19, totaling $562 million.

The second-largest token, Ether, initially fell as much as 4.1% on Monday before climbing back, eventually recovering to 3.5% to trade at $1,530, still below its recent high of $2,000 per token- prior to its eagerly awaited Merge upgrade, which is scheduled for mid-September, it has been fluctuating. In a letter published on Friday, experts at Bitfinex noted that bearish sentiment appeared to be spreading to all so-called risk assets. “Ethereum’s dip ahead of the upcoming Merge is also notable,” they added. The crypto currency space’s notoriously volatile environment “shows no signs of slowing down.”

After a difficult sell-off in May and June, Bitcoin (BTC-USD) is having a hard time attracting buyers. As the month of August came to a close, Bitcoin displayed signals indicating it was “just barely hanging on” above $20,000, a price that has been a point of contention for traders recently. The price of Bitcoin fell over this past weekend to a 7-week low of $19,616. After rising on Monday, its price fell once more on Tuesday, reaching a low of $19,649. According to data from Yahoo Finance, Bitcoin was trading around $20,300 as of Wednesday morning, down 7% from the previous week and 15% from the previous month.

Yachting & the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

J-Class yachts, which were abandoned prior to World War II, have returned to the water at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, and were reconstructed using vintage designs. Although it is uncommon for sailors to fall off the deck of a massive J-Class yacht, there is enough risk that each J in competition includes a chase boat to save those who do. Envision maneuvering massive sails on a cramped, sloping deck, without the safety net of the lifelines common on other boats. On J-Class boats, there are no lifelines because they would prevent the tacking of the massive forward sails, the jibs. Additionally, those lines would undermine the boat’s distinctive appearance, stemming from over a century of tradition.

The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, which begins on Monday in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, will feature competition from over 50 vessels, including four J-Class yachts. While many of the boats will be 60 to 80 feet long, Js are significantly longer, and their masts are substantially taller. Olympic gold and America’s Cup victor, John Kostecki, said of the Js: “The Js have the most graceful shape imaginable, and in their sheer enormity they portray a sense of grandeur that no other boats can match. They are so breathtaking when you first see them on the water.” The history of the America’s Cup saw a distinct phase for J-Class yachts. They were constructed in accordance with guidelines established at the turn of the century, and were selected for three America’s Cup races between England and the United States from 1930–1937.

The original Js were pricey throwaways only meant for racing. Through World War II, not a single vessel was kept in sailing condition. What couldn’t be salvaged for use in the war, was simply left behind. The original J-Class yachts outlived their intended use for racing and were not designed for relaxed weekend sailing. J-Class designs have subsequently been resurrected by a select few who can afford to indulge themselves in their majesty and elegance. There are now seven in existence. Velsheda, an upcoming competitor in Sardinia, was constructed in 1933 and left for ruin, in the mud, in 1937. The Dutch entrepreneur, Ronald de Waal, now owns and runs it, after it was saved in 1984. After a thorough refurbishment, it appears as it did in 1933. These boats’ helming is very stressful. Js are not quick to turn, due to their tonnage and archaic configuration, the long keel in particular.

The X49E, a 49-foot yacht designed for long-distance cruising, is the first yacht with electric propulsion to be launched by X-Yachts. The owner, who intends to sail his yacht, and the Danish yard, collaborated closely. Technical manager, John Morsing, states that he and the owner “worked closely together. It was vital to choose the right project for our first boat with electric power. This owner is an expert on our boats and is extremely passionate about environmentally friendly, silent boating. Additionally, he wants to do blue-water sailing, which will place even more strain on the system.” Under the aft cabin bunks, on either side, are installed twin 10kW Oceanvolt ServoProp electric pods. They have a 28.8 kW lithium battery bank that provides a range of about 23 miles at 5 knots. The maritime industry’s market for electric propulsion is booming, with many different brands recently electrifying all of their most recent models.
