Netflix Might Become A Gaming Company Too
Netflix began with renting and shipping DVDs and then moved on to streaming other people’s movies and TV shows and later it started making its own movies and TV shows. What’s Next?
Yes it’s happening. Maybe it is due to rising competitions or FOMO — Fear of Missing Out. So Netflix announced plans to offer gaming on its streaming platform in 2021.
Recently, Netflix has offered to buy publicly listed Finnish Next Games, the publisher of games like ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘Walking Dead’. The deal is part of Netflix’s bigger strategy to build out its gaming content as a complement to its video catalogue.
The company expects to be in gaming for the long haul as it thinks the main value of its games will be in keeping existing subscribers more engaged in the Netflix app. So If anyone just loves any show, then gaming will make him more & more involve on playing video games on Netflix of that show.
Netflix founder has said that video games are one of the biggest competitors for the company.
Mike Verdu — former facebook executive and made him in charge of working with developers, to bring games and other content to Oculus Virtual Reality headsets.
The idea was to offer video games within next year. The games would appear alongside the current fare as a new genre similar to shows, documentaries & stand up specials.
Netflix’s competitor like Disney+ have theme parks & Marvel movies & hotstar while Netflix’s revenue comes only from subscriptions. This is why they are trying to move into new space. Not just Netflix, others are too deeply interested in spreading into different spaces.
Just take example of Facebook — it is no longer just social app, it is moving into metaverse & virtual reality. Same with Robinhood — it is not just stock broker app, they are coming into crypto space. Spotify, too, is transforming from music to audio platform. Netflix is no different.
That’s it. A short of piece of information about what’s happening around. Thanks for having me🙋🏻♂️
