Rufus AI Will Assist All Amazon Users with Shopping Choices.

Amazon’s AI shopping assistant, Rufus, is now available to all US users on the Amazon mobile app. Accessible via an icon in the navigation bar, Rufus can answer product-related questions, compare items, and provide order updates. Initially launched in February for a limited audience, Rufus uses Amazon’s product data, reviews, community Q&As, and web information for its responses. Users can ask about product specifics, like the ease of cleaning a coffee maker, or general recommendations, such as the best outdoor speaker. Rufus can also address non-shopping questions, including those about US elections, though it may still need refinement on issues such as it is in beta.

Rufus is here just in time for Amazon Prime Day which kicks off tomorrow, lasting two days and expected to generate $13.3 billion in sales, a 6% increase from last year. The event boosts midsummer spending on discounted items. Amazon’s stock price has reached a record high, surpassing a $2 trillion market cap, driven by enthusiasm for its cloud and advertising units.

New COPIED Act Aims to Protect Content Creators’ Rights.

A new bipartisan Senate bill, the Content Origin Protection and Integrity from Edited and Deepfaked Media Act (COPIED Act), aims to protect artists, songwriters, and journalists from having their content used by AI without consent. The bill, introduced by Senators Maria Cantwell, Martin Heinrich, and Marsha Blackburn, requires AI companies to enable content provenance information, making it easier to identify AI-generated content and combat deepfakes. Content with provenance information cannot be used to train AI models or create AI content. The bill also allows content owners to sue for unauthorized use and mandates the National Institute of Standards and Technology to develop guidelines for content provenance and AI detection. We are yet to see how this act will be enforced and implemented on open source platforms as well as close dAI. The COPIED Act’s groups support the COPIED Act and are part of a broader legislative push to regulate AI technology.
