I never knew.
The Vatican has unveiled its latest attempt to connect with today’s digitally absorbed youth: Luce, a cartoon mascot, styled with all the pop-culture flair of a Japanese anime character.
Now, just pause for a moment.
The Vatican, a 2,000-year-old institution, has decided that what it needs to bring young people back to faith is… a cute cartoon?
Who’s the brainiac behind this?
But they have to keep up to the times or they will eventually fade away like everything else.
From solemn Latin chants to a mascot with “shining eyes” and “hope of the heart,” the transition is dramatic, to say the least.
As Archbishop Rino Fisichella explained, the Vatican is “entering into the world of pop culture, so beloved by our young people.”
Of course, it’s easy to imagine a team of cardinals huddled around, contemplating just how many followers “Luce” might attract on TikTok.
After all, who wouldn’t want their faith represented by a friendly cartoon character at a comics convention?
