The World of NFTs: Part 6 — Crypto Art Galleries — A case study
Read my original post at Voice.
I have been writing a lot recently about various Crypto art platforms. While these platforms appeal to the masses they have their own problems. They do not provide proper attention to serious collectors. Decentralization brings its own cons. As anybody can now create art, the real talents sometimes get lost in the crowd. Enter a new bunch of platforms that will enable better curation to appeal to serious collectors only. Enter the Crypto Art Galleries.
The uniqueness of Crypto galleries
Crypto art galleries have been there for quite some time, slowly integrating themselves in the decentralized blockchain world. We have seen them as collectors in Super Rare or Known Origin. They evaluate hundreds of art every day and handpick only the very few rare ones which will appeal to the true collectors. Such galleries work at the intersection between traditional and crypto art. They link physical and digital art. They play a major role in teaching newcomers the importance of trust and security along with the uniqueness and authenticity of the artworks.
The crypto galleries bring with them their own team of reputed curators and leading art critics to identify and select the masters of the digital art scene. They are trying to push the boundaries, breaking out from the traditional scene.
Exhibitions
Let us take the example of Osinachi. Kate Vass Galerie performed a solo exhibition of the African artist from March 10th — July 10th, 2020. Kate Vass Galerie monitored the artist closely in Super Rare and actually purchased some of his art as NFTs. Now they have entered into a collaboration with him to set up a gallery for the physical world. The art is getting sold as ‘Print on Paper, unframed Size: 30x40 cm’ or ‘Ultra HD photo under glossy Acrylic glass Size: 50x65cm Unique’. Prices range between CHF950 to CHF5000.
The Gallery of Crypto Art (G○C△) is a virtual premier art gallery. G○C△ exhibitions are shown entirely in Virtual Reality. The Museum of Crypto Art in Somnium Space (Parcel 1047) successfully concluded an exhibition of artworks by Espen Kluge. VR gives the galleries to curate all of the aspects: architecture, the composition of works, colors as well as audio effects. This break-out from a two-dimensional world to a 3-D metaverse is the next logical step forward. The recent exhibition is called Private Views running from September 10 — February 1, 2021
Super Rare also has a VR gallery in Cryptovoxels.
Lens-based ART
Kate Vass Galerie also focuses on photography. In order to bring photographers into the blockchain, the Galerie is now partnering with Ephimera, an NFT platform purely focussed on lens-based art. Based on the Ethereum blockchain, Ephimera provides space for photographers to tokenize, exhibit, and sell their work to collectors. and Kate Vass Galerie is bringing such collectors close to them.
Publications:
The galleries are also involved in art publications. Key critics discuss various art styles in such a forum and also showcases the top artists. Kate Vass Galerie’s quarterly publication is called “Collecting art”. It has a digital version as well as a new A4 format.
The new platform Ephimera is also bringing out publications. The link is given here.
Conclusion:
Blockchain-based art is available in a silo. It is very important for the platforms to bring in people from the outside world in this ecosystem. The major art influencers, the collectors are still untapped. The Galleries brings in the aesthetic value and also a sense of safety for the bidders/ collectors. The availability of art form in any media of choice (NFT, Print, Physical Original, etc.) makes the transition smooth. With every coming day, we will see more of this integration, and such galleries will shape the way we look into art. It is also to be mentioned that parcels in Sominum Space, Decentraland, The Sandbox, or Cryptovoxels will play a huge role in the integration. These are all parts of a big puzzle that is slowly falling in place. We are lucky to be a part of it.
