This project caught my eye for its great goals and work to further our web2 and web3 cybersecurity. Meet ATOR Protocol Ator Protocol $ATOR, where privacy and cybersecurity meet crypto. However, to understand Ator, you first have to know more about the TOR project.

♦What is the TOR project?

TOR project stands for The Onion Routing Project. It is a decentralized network that allows users to browse the internet anonymously. The data you send and receive goes through different relay nodes. Your data going through different relay nodes is what makes it impossible to check where the data came from.

So your IP address becomes “hidden,” and your activity becomes difficult to track.

More about tor

The United States government initially created the TOR project to allow its agents to communicate anonymously across the globe. Then it was later released as open-source software. However, using TOR does not guarantee absolute security since attackers could exploit vulnerabilities in the source code.

Now people use the TOR project for various reasons:

  • to protect their privacy.
  • to bypass crypto censorship.
  • to communicate safely in heavily censored areas.
  • to prevent hackers from intercepting their data.

So far it has over 2.5 million daily users!

There are some problems with the TOR project, such like:

  • The network is slow because only 7000 relay nodes exist globally.

  • There are no incentives for the community to run these relay nodes.
  • Running nodes is not only expensive but also requires a great deal of hefty knowledge.

The Ator Protocol comes to the rescue.

♦What is the Ator Protocol?

Ator Protocol is a project that solves those afore mentioned problems by providing economic incentives for TOR contributors

How does Ator Protocol does that?

  1. Ator Protocol rewards people who host relay nodes with $ATOR tokens. That creates an incentive to host more nodes, leading to a faster TOR network. A faster network attracts more users.
  2. They aim to sell physical relays and routers to ease the cost of running nodes and ease users into the process without requiring much technical knowledge.
  3. They reward relay nodes with $ATOR in exchange for bandwidth through a process called Proof-of-Uptime.

KEEP IN MIND, the exact details have not been fully finalized as it’s still a 3-month-old project.

There’s also a point you should know. ATOR Protocol is not a subsidiary of TOR. It is not endorsed by TOR. Ator team’s opinions or views are not a direct reflection of the team at TOR.

♦More about Ator Protocol $ATOR Token

Ator Protocol’s token is an ERC-20 token built to not charge trading fees. The contract swaps in “strict proportion to the trading volume.”

Ator Protocol $ATOR Token Utility

  • It’s rewarded for providing uptime for the Tor relay.
  • Holders can gain early access to the hardware.
  • More details will be announced with further developments.

  • Circulating Supply: 72 million

This means that 72% of supply is out in circulation.

  • Market cap: $14.1 million
  • FDV: $19.6m

This show there’s around 25% difference. All are good signs.

$ator allocation

♦Ator Protocol $ATOR Allocation

  • 45% liquidity
  • 25% In a contract for buying and selling tokens according to a tax schedule
  • 10% locked in CEX
  • 10% relay node rewards
  • 10% team

The 20% for relay node rewards and team are vested for 2 years, with weekly emissions.

They’re consistently updating the community through Twitter and Medium. The last update on Medium was about their Relay Registration Beta program reaching their 1% goal with 60 active, worldwide relays. You can read their May Achievements Summary, here.

Final Thoughts

Crypto is about owning your data. Since using relays makes it harder to track and sell that data. Incentivizing the growth of the TOR network fulfills a part of the crypto ethos. And that’s what @ atorprotocol stands for.

Easier access to browsers that provide a good level of privacy is what the web3 world needs to actually start transitioning into owning their data.
