$Pepe has been the talk of the town all around crypto circles this past week. Some are treating Matt Furie’s famous internet frog as if it were some sort of a novelty that just came on the scene and turned heads with his amphibian swagger and charm, but the truth lies deeper than that. Pepe has been around the block for a long long time.

Pepe the Frog has been a crypto mascot and a meme long before most of today's crypto influencers and investors even set up their first Coinbase account or bought their first Satoshi or NFT.

So let’s dive into the pond here and see if we can unravel some of the mystery surrounding everybody’s favorite frog.

It all started many years ago when artist Matt Furie was drawing frogs for fun while on the job at a thrift shop in San Francisco while in his 20’s. Eventually, he created a small comic strip called Playtime and named his character Pepe.

This led to a comic called Boys Club based on Matt and his friends, but using the Pepe the Frog character along with a few other animal sidekicks.
