Japan Blockchain Conference 2018 Report

Blockchain ventures from Japan and around the world gathered in downtown Tokyo for one of the largest industry events the country had seen.

The Japan Blockchain Conference was held on June 26 and 27 at Tokyo International Forum. It was one of the largest blockchain gatherings in Japanese history with over 100 experts in cryptocurrency, over seventy exhibitors, and representatives attending from organizations. Estimates put the number of attendees at over 10,000.

During his presentation, the Chief Executive of financial services giant SBI Holdings, Yoshitaka Kitao said he is wagering that,

“Blockchain related innovations will fuel the blast for the Japanese economy after the years of economic imbalance.”

Attending various blockchain and cryptocurrency events, it’s interesting to see the mixture of companies in attendance. This time, a contingent of to class blockchain ventures from Israel was in attendance brought over by the Alignment Group and Orbs.

  • Alignment is a one-stop-shop for blockchain creation and transformation including ICO consulting, in-house incubation, investment, and media initiatives.
  • Orbs is a public blockchain built for the needs of apps with millions of users, from SLAs to adjustable fee models to on-demand capacity.

There were also a substantial number of local projects and startups from around the world. Interestingly, some of the Japan-originating ventures had established headquarters offshore.

The overseas projects were almost all new to the Japan market and asked me about the general trends and sentiment here. Seeking ways to capture the attention of serious Japanese cryptocurrency investors and other potential stakeholders, they all had a high degree of interest in our promotion services, especially our AirDrop Q offering.

Overall the sentiment was optimistic:

  • I interviewed several C-level executives over the two days visiting from abroad. All believed Japan was an important market for them. Many also added how impressed with the country’s overall proactive stance on blockchain technology and cryptocurrency.
  • Speaking to Japanese leaders at the event, many expressed their international outlook and desire to expand globally.

I’ll be publishing a few in-depth interviews in the coming weeks. In the meantime, below are some photos so you can get an idea of the event.
