Social ledger is defined in Duke Fuqua school of business as

An accounting of social assets (social capital derived from positive relationships) and social liabilities derived from negative relationships.

In essence, social ledger is like an aggregate of the assets and liabilities made over a project. It helps keep track of the activities of the project. And RChain make use of the Mattermost social ledger system to keep track of project state, organize efforts and in summary just be an alternative to Slack.

Even though Mattermost is over 3 years old, many people struggle to find their way around it and understand how it works. This post is meant to explain how you can use Mattermost for your organised work.

Just like Slack, Mattermost works with groups in which you can then create a public or private channel (but you have to have admin privilege to do this). To join new channels log into your account, click on the more link on the side bar. It would show all the public channels you are free to join in a workspace.

To get started, type the command /dig. This would show the list of key links and tools. To get help, simply type /dig help. And you would be shown all the list of available command.

Now, Mattermost has a lot of cool features that help organize group project and keep track of them. To see the team

/dig team

This would show the teams, level of engagement and roles. To change the level of engagement, just click the link of either (novice, expert, apprentice, advisor or regular) similar to change role, click the link of either (guide, scribe, actor or link)

/dig link [title](url)

This command creates a link with a title and adds it to the already existing list

/dig doc [title](url)

This is similar to the link but it’s used for documents.

/dig action [issue](github url)

This allows you to add issues from github as actions.

To create a channel on Mattermost, click on more on the sidebar, a modal box would pop up, then you can create a new channel.

/dig goal goals to achieve

This is how you set goals on Mattermost

/dig team @userA @userB

This syntax allows you add members to a team and assign them roles.

Hopefully this piece would put you through on how to get started with mattermost
