The new generation of ColdLar Wallet, Pro 3 has been released. P3 comes equipped with some very essential communication and security improvements which has earned it the title “Guardian of the Blockchain Assets”. And luckily I got one free wallet by participating in the Global Influencer Plan, and that is why I decide to make this teardown and review.

Generally speaking, the wallet has a beautiful appearance and it feels great when holding it in hand.

1) Device and accessories

Before we start the teardown, let’s take a look at the accessories inside the package. There are Type-C charging cable, password card, leather case for card and device, instruction manual, cleaning cloth. etc . The charging cable is standard TYPE-C, which supports double-sided insertion. However, the manufacturer does not supply charge connector, and I was informed by ColdLar that standard 5V charge connector is suitable.

2) Device Back

The whole device is heavy, and has a tactile sensation. The back is smooth with the dark glass and a vivid golden logo. I didn’t see the screw holes, so I guess is of hot melt fitting technology. This design is relatively safe, but the dismantling is more difficult.

However, at the same time, this technology forces the R&D engineers to focus on the design and minimize the after-sales problems caused by mass production.

3) Device Inside

Necessary tools for teardown: Air gun, tweezers, screwdrivers, pinches.

After blowing the wallet with the air gun for about 60 seconds, open the wallet by tweezers carefully and slowly. At first glance, the inside looks very harmonious and professional, because the battery, wiring system, the small board and motherboard are all in good order.

The hot melt glue on the glass back cover is visible and sticky. The NFC antenna is on the top, and the motherboard is under the antenna. The battery is in the middle, and a small panel (speaker, USB, fingerprint recognition module) is at the bottom. The small board and the motherboard are connected through the FPC cable.

4) Battery

The soft-packed lithium battery is difficult to be removed by a pinch or tweezers. It has obvious advantage of safety, while disadvantage of deformation.

5) Trunking

After the battery was removed, a trunking on the base was found. It is speculated that the trunking is specially designed for the FPC cable, in order to prevent the cable extrusion caused by the battery. Professional design!

6) Motherboard

Taking the NFC antenna off and open the screw, the core motherboard of the machine appears. Then remove the shield cover through the air gun, all the chips and the containers are exposed. Tidy and clear.

Processor is from MEDIATEX with ARM architecture.

7) NFC, Screen, camera and others

NFC transmission is applied to fasten the speed. The in-built NFC antenna is beautiful and smooth. LCD screen has a high resolution and excellent display effect. 13MP Camera of Sony module has excellent shooting performance. Fingerprint identification is also impressive.

Generally speaking, it is really a premium and well-designed hardware wallet.
