Dear community members, we are happy to announce ColdStack’s ongoing technical partnership with Akash! As ColdStack continues to scale in an effort to effectively offer a portal to access any decentralized storage network, it is essential for our project to collaborate with others which can greatly improve our technical capabilities. Akash’s network provides a great way for us to expand our node network’s capabilities, and we’re excited to work with them!

Akash is a decentralized cloud provider that lets anyone quickly deploy a docker container to the cloud provider of your choice. Users can deploy decentralized applications, serverless apps, and more through the Akash platform, with this process being made as easy as possible for users. Akash is also censorship resistant, meaning it is much more reliable than traditional cloud networks. As a decentralized storage aggregator, we feel that ColdStack is well suited to be deployed on Akash, and that doing so will help our project scale.

Technical Details

Our collaboration with Akash begins with us deploying our File Nodes to their network. With our File Nodes playing a key role in our overall infrastructure, scaling these capabilities is of critical importance. We have already completed any tests needed, and already have our node deployed and in production.

File Nodes are responsible for all interactions during the data uploading/downloading process. These nodes record the metadata regarding an individual’s files, and replicate it in order to eventually recall a user’s metadata. Metadata contains the file size and hash (to control the file’s integrity), a specific user’s wallet hash, and a record of which gateway node the file node eventually interacts with. This metadata is securely stored on the blockchain, and can be easily verified.

An individual can use AWS S3 API methods to upload a file to the file node, and allows users to move and manage data with no or minimal coding and makes it easy to migrate data from Amazon to ColdStack. Users can retrieve a previously stored file via S3 REST API or via URL (Amazon virtual buckets engine). ColdStack’s file node infrastructure will allow us to eventually implement a full-scale caching service that will be able to cache files during file retrieval operations. Deploying these nodes to Akash makes it so we can pair the reliability of S3 with the sustainability of Akash’s network.

Why It Matters

Utilizing Akash improves the overall decentralization of our network. Instead of hosting our nodes with a centralized entity, we are able to combine the immutability provided by decentralization with the reliability of a traditional hosting service through Akash’s network. That’s no small task — one of the reasons ColdStack exists is to make decentralized storage more affordable and easy to access. Having successfully deployed our node to Akash means we are able to better scale our data storage capabilities. While ColdStack specializes in storing cold data, or data that needs to be stored for great periods of time, we also think it is important to be able to store all kinds of data! This is especially important as ColdStack seeks to expand our footprint within the NFT and metaverse sector, which requires a great deal of reliance and variation in storage needs.

We see the deployment of these nodes as the first step in an ongoing technical collaboration with Akash. As the ColdStack project grows, so will the technical needs of our project. Having reliable partners such as Akash gives us the resources necessary to fully deploy our storage application in the most robust way possible.

Stay Tuned:

As we have mentioned, we plan to collaborate further with Akash as our project grows. We recommend that community members follow us, as well as Akash on social media in order to stay updated on developments regarding both projects. We look forward to working with Akash, and growing with our community members!
