We’re pleased to announce Co-Liv Summit 2018, the second edition of our conference series featuring the best and brightest in co-living.

Carl Sagan said, You have to know the past to understand the present”.

We say: You have to know the past in order to understand the present and shape the future.

On the first day of the conference, we will travel through the history of co-living, exploring its cultural, social and financial dimensions, and the different shapes co-living initiatives take. You’ll hear from some of the most important players in the co-living industry, and we will connect multiple stakeholders together to identify common challenges that need to be addressed in order to shape a sustainable future for co-living around the world.

We also feel that the best way to predict the future is to invent it.

The second day of the conference is dedicated to interactive workshops and round-table discussions to address the challenges we’ve identified on the first day. Each session will allow participants to deep dive into a challenge that most resonates with them. By the end of the second-day participants will leave the conference inspired by solutions to their challenges, and with a powerful network to put it all in practice.

Summit program summary:

Day 1 of the Summit will be split into two parts: a look back at the history co-living, and a look forward to the challenges and possibilities.

Part I: We will cover the history of co-living and categorize the different forms of co-living through three different actors, i.e.: doing good for society, community-driven models, the business of being home away from home and co-living as a solution for societal ills.

  • What is co-living? Forms and challenges
  • A look back at the last 100 years, past lives in the present
  • The current state of co-living
  • Co-living in the year 2030

Part II: We will talk about the possibilities of co-living, i.e. what co-living can be a solution for, and what are the challenges to get there?

  • Designing for meaningful interactions and “new aging”
  • Co-living as an enabler for the new digital economy
  • Community lessons
  • Co-living as a city builder
  • Roundtable: how to make sustainable co-living structures?

At the end of the first day, we will summarize the challenges we’ve identified as a group to inform our roundtables and workshops on Day 2.

Day 2 of the Summit is a series of interactive workshops and roundtable discussions to address the challenges presented on Day 1.

Round-table #1 — Co-living: co-creating a manifesto

As everything in life, co-living has many shapes and faces however we are missing a shared definition. Let’s build a collective manifesto for the co-living movement.

Round-table #2 — Co-living and the city: how to meet cities needs and break old barriers

Studies say that 70% of the population will be living in cities by 2030. However, cities are not just cities. Cities are living organism with their own needs, characteristics, history and collective rules. How can co-living serve as an agent to develop the city environment and how can we break old barriers to allow this movement to thrive?

Workshop #1 — Creating the invisible, how to enable sustainable communities

Community building is an organic process that can’t be forced, but can for sure be facilitated. On a context in which we have business functioning as community enablers, how do we create the invisible tie that holds a community together?

Workshop #2 — Designing the unknown: how to design for permanent beta communities

Physical environments shape the types of interactions people are going to have. Each type of interaction for each group of people and activity requires a specific space design. However specific, in the co-living context every community is a permanent beta, gathering different profiles from multiple backgrounds in a permanent loop of welcoming new members and saying goodbye to previous ones. How do you design to facilitate interaction and allow a community feeling to grow in such challenging context? How will spatial design influence the design of a community's culture? How do you create a feedback loop between developers, operators, and users? How do you create a feeling of home anywhere while embracing the local aspects? All these questions can shape how we design where we live our lives.

Workshop #3 — Designing sustainable business models

Running any business is a challenge and even purpose driven ideas need to be economically sustainable. In the context of the new economies lies the co-living movement, in which people find a sense of belonging by sharing their lives in a community setting while keeping their needed level of privacy. How do you design a business model that allows purpose and belief to coexist with the reality of our financial world?

Workshop #4 — Co-living as the builder of sustainable living models

Some researches say that the future will be urban, while others say we can not continue to live in cities as we do. As an answer to this challenge more and more people are experimenting with other forms of shared living in a digital economy. Can rural co-living present us with a more sustainable life? How do we foster a dynamic and connected living balanced with a natural and less impactful life?
