Writing is like Exercising a Muscle

And Cultivating Creative Discipline Will Make You Unstoppable

I recently took up daily exercising again and it’s been hard but a hell of a rewarding journey. But it’s been really difficult for one reason: I stopped doing it for a while. A long time, actually.

Like any other skill, writing is like exercising a muscle. Without proper exercise it’ll wither back into its former state, because after we wean ourselves off a steady diet of exercise we’ll eventually fall back into a prior state of not exercising, or not being the person we want to be.

But to develop any skill we also need to cultivate a habit of discipline. To do the hard things when we need to instead of always reaching for the stuff on the bottom shelf because it’s continually within our grasps.

Without discipline, we won’t stick to a rigid diet of exercise. And without exercise, we’ll never get stronger.

So if we want to become better at anything, we need to cultivate a healthy mix of both to succeed. That’s the only way we will grow as creative writers, artists, and visionaries to come.
