Patch of Delight
Many Hands Lifted
We’re told to lift our hands
to raise up those who’ll leave us
this week, this month, this year
returning home, off to school, called away
and we raise them, together, to bless
those who’ll leave us, but we
are also raising them in recognition
that we are one group, that they
will still be part of this large circle
of hands lifted.
And when they return,
just as when they arrived
through birth, or move, or calling
we will once again lift
our hands
to welcome them back in.

Patches of Delight is a way to capture the joy I felt in reading Ross Gay’s Book of Delights. I would like to have my own project of finding the magic of every day, so I write tiny poems about little moments that made me happy each day.
