Shelter from the Storm

As you may be able to glean from our show art, the action of Baby Screams Miracle takes place during a massive storm — a weather event of biblical proportions, some might say. We’ve been thinking a lot about that particular turn of phrase as we head in to our first production of 2017, opening on our stage at the end of the month.

As it happens, the weather and Christianity both play important roles in this apocalyptic play — both exert a level of control over the characters lives that becomes increasingly evident as the story progresses. Both seem to necessitate an improbable degree of faith in order to countenance.

We know that weather events such as these factor prominently in Christian theology…but we’re a little fuzzy on the exact details. So we thought we’d do a little research, and let you in on the fruits of our bible study, too. Read on below for some thought-provoking English Standard Version passages, which we imagine are weighing on the minds of our Baby Screams Miracle characters in quite a few scenes.

Noah and the Flood (Genesis 6)

In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst forth, and the windows of the heavens were opened. And rain fell upon the earth forty days and forty nights. On the very same day Noah and his sons, Shem and Ham and Japheth, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them entered the ark, they and every beast, according to its kind, and all the livestock according to their kinds, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, according to its kind, and every bird, according to its kind, every winged creature. They went into the ark with Noah, two and two of all flesh in which there was the breath of life. And those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him. And the Lord shut him in.

The Lord Answers Job (Job 38)

Then the Lord answered Job out of the storm and said:
“Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
Dress for action like a man;
I will question you, and you make it known to me.
“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell me, if you have understanding.
Who determined its measurements — surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?
On what were its bases sunk,
or who laid its cornerstone,
when the morning stars sang together
and all the sons of God shouted for joy

God Will Swallow Up Death Forever (Isaiah 25)

For you have been a stronghold to the poor,
a stronghold to the needy in his distress,
a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat;
for the breath of the ruthless is like a storm against a wall,
like heat in a dry place.

Jesus Calms a Storm (Matthew 8)

And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”

Cast Your Burden on the Lord (Psalm 55)

And I say, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!
I would fly away and be at rest;
yes, I would wander far away;
I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah
I would hurry to find a shelter
from the raging wind and tempest.”
