3 Things to Do Over the Summer to Prepare for College Applications
If you are about to be a senior in high school or the parent of a senior in high school, you are probably wondering what to do over the summer to prepare for the grueling fall application cycle 😩. You might already be dreading September because you know the stress is inevitable.
I am going to make things easy for you and break down your to do list into 3 tasks 🥳. Pay close attention though because they are really important!
1. Spend time on a college campus
I don’t care if this is your dream college or just the college down the street that you might not want to even apply to. There is this thing called public transportation, so you don’t have an excuse!
Ideally, you would do a campus tour and maybe talk to current students. However, if that is too much, just show up. Go to the cafe or cafeteria. Grab a bite to eat. Make the trip with a friend or friends 💁🏽♀️. Hang out! Bring a soccer ball or frisbee (or whatever else you are interested in) and just soak up what it’s like to be on a college campus.
Trust me — the more you do this now, the more comfortable you will be in a year when you are about to start. Plus college is fun! And, you will start to see the best part about it — the friends and social life.🤩🤩
2. Work on that college list
I know…. This is not very fun, but this is probably the #1 most important thing you need to have done by early Fall. Otherwise, how will you even know what applications you have to submit?!?!
We really want you to be prepared! Let’s be real. There are hundreds of students now who are paying 💰💰 to have a counselor to help them pick schools and apply to them. You don’t need this! Trust me, there isn’t some secret sauce to picking the “right” schools. Everyone will have different choices, but you need to do the research!
Even if you are just stalking a college’s social media profiles or clicking through their website, you will start to get a better sense of the school and if it is the right fit for you.
Pro Tip: Follow your favorite colleges on social media! They post pictures about social activities and cool spots on campus.
If you are wondering how to start or approach it, that is why we put together the following guide. There are a few things you need to keep in mind like if you can get in and the cost, but we walk you through all those decisions.
3. Do things you enjoy 😎 and figure out your interests!
The final and best part of the list is that you should just continue to be you! If you love writing songs or playing soccer, continue to do that. If you need a job to help out at home or have to take care of your siblings, that is what you need to do, and don’t feel guilty about it.
If you can, try and delve into your interests. If you want to be a nurse or a doctor, maybe see if you can volunteer at a hospital. If you are interested in engineering, see if there are courses online you can do. Even if its just a few hours a week, continuing with your interests is important!
