Week 2 Overnight Top 25

Clemson (1–0) — Beat Furman 48–7. The biggest question on this team is who the starting quarterback should be. We may not get an answer between Kelly Bryant and Hunter Lawrence until given the capitulation of the ACC’s Florida schools in week 1. Next Game: at Texas A&M

Alabama (1–0) — Beat Louisville 51–14. Another year, another beating of some poor unsuspecting team at a neutral site opener. You would think teams would learn and maybe they have given next year’s victim is Duke (LOL). Oh yeah. And Alabama has no quarterback controversy. Tua is the guy. Next Game: Arkansas St.

Ohio St. (1–0) — Beat Oregon St. 77–31. Things are fine whenever you roll Lucky 7s like Ohio St. just did. Need to fix the defense though. Even with a significant amount of garbage time, 31 points is too much to allow Oregon St. Next Game: Rutgers

Oklahoma (1–0) — Beat Florida Atlantic 63–14. Now paging Oklahoma to the bakery. The sad thing being that UCLA certainly isn’t supposed to be the cupcake it appears to be. As for Kyler Murray, he looked fine at QB. We won’t really know for another couple of weeks. Next Game: UCLA

Georgia (1–0) — Beat Austin Peay 45–0. The season starts this week after the FCS beating. Georgia seemed bored by having to bother with Austin Peay. Expect a more focused performance this week. Next Game: at South Carolina

Auburn (1–0) — Beat Washington 21–16. Was Auburn lucky to win? Yes. But you also make your own luck and Auburn did so by not making the big mistake and getting off to a fast start. The question is if the same formula works against a bear of a schedule that includes, LSU, Mississippi St., Georgia and Alabama. Next Game: Alabama St.

Wisconsin (1–0) — Beat Western Kentucky 34–3. Ho hum. All that needs to be said, especially as all the contenders on the opposite side of the Big 10 had varying degrees of struggle. Next Game: New Mexico

Washington (0–1) — Lost 21–16 to Auburn. Should have won the game but there is a lot to take from this. Don’t listen to the media idiots that are shoveling dirt on Washington’s playoff grade. The Pac-12 is improved and 12–1 is almost assuredly going to be good enough, even if Auburn stumbles to 9–3. Next Game: North Dakota

Notre Dame (1–0) — Beat Michigan 24–17. That all the major computers show a possible undefeated Notre Dame seems crazy to me until I see the flotsam in the ACC other than Clemson (who is mercifully not on the schedule this season). My counterpoint: David Shaw and Stanford have generally owned Brian Kelly. Next Game: Ball St.

West Virginia (1–0) — The nation’s best passing game took a few minutes to get firing (only led by 6 at halftime against Tennessee) but once it did, whoa to the opposing defense. Not many in the Big 12 are going to have the ability in the back 7 to shut these guys down. Next Game: Youngstown St.

Stanford (1–0) — Beat San Diego St. 31–10. Is what the Stanford running game produced (or didn’t produce) the real Stanford? If so, can the Stanford passing game keep up? It did in game one but game two brings a bit higher level of opponent. Next Game: USC

TCU (1–0) — Beat Southern 55–7. Nothing to see here. Just how TCU would prefer it, at least until Ohio St. comes to town in two weeks. Next Game: at SMU

Mississippi St. (1–0) — Beat Stephen F. Austin 63–6. If ever there was a time to be without the starting quarterback, playing an FCS team is the time. Additionally, getting the backup quarterback more time with a new coach and offense in always nice. Next Game: at Kansas St.

Penn St. (1–0) — Beat Appalachian St. 45–38 (OT). After whatever that 4th quarter against Appalachian St., there should be real concern with Pittsburgh up next. Especially if the randomizer that is the Pitt offense over the last few seasons shows up as good. Next Game: at Pittsburgh

LSU (1–0) — Beat Miami 33–17. For all the hoopla about dominating the game, LSU was outgained (again) and won the turnover battle (again). As good as that makes everything, it still leaves LSU vulnerable to teams with explosive offenses and team that can force turnovers. Next Game: SE Louisiana

Virginia Tech (1–0) — Beat Florida St. 24–3. A nice job of keeping the new secondary from being exposed, in part because Florida St. can’t block anyone and DeAndre Francois spent the night running for his life. The real tests will be later against Miami and Notre Dame. Next Game: William & Mary

USC (1–0) — Beat UNLV 43–21. Played one good half. And one not so good half. Next week will be a bigger test with a 17 year old starting quarterback. Next Game: at Stanford

Michigan (0–1) — Lost to Notre Dame 24–17. Good defense. Pathetic offense. Consider this ranking a placeholder until we understand how good the Notre Dame defense really is (or how bad the Michigan offense really is). Next Game: Western Michigan

Michigan St. (1–0) — Beat Utah St. 38–31. What is the heck was that? As usual, Michigan St. played infuriating offensive football on first and second down and bailed itself out on third down. We’ve seen that for years though. The worry is the defense that gave up 31 points to Utah St. Next Game: at Arizona St.

Oregon (1–0) — Beat Bowling Green 58–24. Justin Herbert played. Oregon looked good. This is the 3rd season of this. Hope for the Ducks sake he stays healthy. Next Game: Portland St.

Boise St. (1–0) — Beat Troy 56–20. Comprehensive beating of Troy in Alabama, but anyone cares about is the turnover throne. Next Game: UConn

UCF (1–0) — Beat UConn 56–17. I continue to see uppity UCF fans all over the place. I don’t know how many are actual fans and how many are Alabama haters looking for anything to grasp at. No matter, it appears the winning streak is going to continue for a little while. Next Game: South Carolina St.

Oklahoma St. (1–0) — Beat Missouri St. 58–17. I don’t understand why nobody is picking this team. Gundy seems to always have this team ready, no matter the losses from the previous season. Next Game: South Alabama

Boston College (1–0) — Beat UMass 55–21. Call this a hunch pick. I think Boston College is quite good. Sometimes that is all you need early in the season. Next Game: Holy Cross

Northwestern (1–0) — Beat Purdue 31–27. The first half was great. But Northwestern needs to figure out what happened on offense after halftime. It’s never good to go from scoring 31 in the first half to 0 in the second half, no matter the situation. Next Game: Duke
