All three of us, the founders of Colloq are big fans of the web. More precise: the open web. We also like the idea of the Indieweb, and even though I personally haven’t yet gotten my webmentions to work properly, the idea is a great one and will hopefully one day catch on.

Besides the core idea of Colloq to be privacy-oriented and tracking-free, we always talked about the ability to export user data. That’s because we want our users to be able to re-use, share or even only store the data they own.

Building features for a platform requires some good planning and adding the data export functionality hasn’t been our biggest priority so far. But on May 25th of 2018, the Generic Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will start to kick in and one of the requirements of GDPR is that users must be able to export their personal information stored on our platform at any time. To comply with the regulation that we highly value as a privacy-focused company all our users will find an option labeled “Export account data…” in their account settings. This will provide a convenient way to access your data.

This feature will allow you to download a ZIP archive including:

  • your profile information
  • your profile images
  • lists of events that you are:
  • following
  • attending
  • organising
  • or have suggested
  • a Readme file with some explanations
  • and a Version file to keep track of all your exports ;)

Here is a screenshot of the how the exported folder structure and files from Colloq can look like:

Besides meeting the GDPR regulation requirements, this feature is a first step to keep Colloq as open as possible and to let you export the data you enter.

If you haven’t signed up for Colloq yet, you can register here and of course also try out the new and fantastic data export. More importantly though, we appreciate your support and our users being part of our journey to build a new, friendly and diverse community to eventually improve today’s conference culture.
