It’s that time of the year! The leaves are changing, the Monster Mash is playing, and costumes are on the shelves! Halloween can be an exciting time for children and adults alike. These 10 simple tips can help ensure a safe and fun holiday for everyone!

1. Travel in a Pack
Go trick-or-treating in a large group and stick to a pre-planned route.

2. Sidewalks > Roads
Always walk on the sidewalk, cross the street at designated crosswalks and obey traffic signals. Be sure to look both ways and walk - not run - during trick-or-treat activities.

3. Get your Glow On
Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see, and be seen, by drivers. It’s also a good idea to decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape to stay more visible.

4. Break Out the Face Paint
Face paint and makeup are great alternatives to face masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.

5. The Right Fit
When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls. Making sure the costume is light-colored (if possible) and being made of fireproof material is always a plus.

6. Toy Weapons
If using a replica weapon as part of your costume, make sure it is extremely evident it is a toy. Props such as toy guns or swords should be made of pliable material.

7. Unwrapping Sweets
Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them. On that note, be sure to only eat factory-wrapped candy.

8. Driving Around
If you’re out on the roads this Halloween, make sure you take extra precautions. Drive with care, enter/exit driveways slowly, turn on your headlights, stay distraction free, and take the time to look for kids at intersections, medians, or curbs. Halloween can be very exciting for children, and they may move in unpredictable ways.

9. Stranger Danger
Kids should never enter a stranger’s house, nor should anyone invite children into their home. If at all possible, adults should accompany their young ones while trick-or-treating.

10. Call 911
If you see any suspicious activity, immediately call 9–1–1. Our primary goal is to keep everyone safe so you all can enjoy your holiday.
