Hardcore and MTN94 Colors, A Growing Spray Can Collage
My homie VOER has a unique mosaic on his wall
The spray cans VOER uses are filled with 11 ounces of paint. Once all of the glossy color is drained and the only thing you hear is the rattle of the mixing ball loudly and freely banging inside, V will put it back in his bag to save it in a box with all the other empties. We were at the yard when I asked how he discarded them, to which he replied “I don’t. I keep them in the cases they arrived in and stack ’em. I want to get mounting squares and glue them up. Why? You want to put me in another story?” he laughs. Of course that was obvious. Since he usually takes the bus I gave him a ride home to view a beautiful display of vibrant color, and it’s only the beginning.
“It’ll look sick once there are enough to cover a good section of my wall. I order in bulk most of the time. Sprayplanet has a loyalty program and if I acclimate a fat number of points I can get a nice package of cans and markers” He’d tell me with a bit of excitement, then went on to point out a paint stick sitting in-between the spent cylinders. “I can keep my dead streakers here, too.
“I try to be resourceful and recycle things. On top of being sentimental, I’ve always loved color. When I was young I had The Wizard of OZ on VHS and the opening screen is a bunch of MGM logos lined up and panning to the upper right screen changing all kinds of colors while transitioning. It was amazing and I’ve never gotten over it”
Looking at what he’s stacked up so far caused me to think of all the trains that’ve been touched.
“For now I’ll just insert the empties without any thought to a pattern. I might come up with a concept later” he concluded before we went outside to smoke a cigarette.
