For the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, Karlos Edmonds, an organizer of the environmental-action group Extinction Rebellion, was planning what he hoped would be his greatest protest yet — illegally planting trees in New York City’s Central Park. The New Jersey resident, who was arrested for demonstrating 12 times last year, was well on his way to building his protest army until the COVID-19 pandemic put an end to mass gatherings. But what at first seemed like the downfall of his plans came with some Earth-friendly side effects, which have fulfilled Edmonds’ vision of helping make a greener Earth in a non-radical way.
