A new reality
The screech of the bread truck at dawn.
Gone.
Quartet of elderly men bantering over coffee inside cafe.
Disbanded.
Candy shop, a hangout for sweet toothed teens and couples.
Closed.
Ticket lines for Friday night movies.
Distant memory.
Once packed parking lot. Bare concrete.
And now, today, the silhouette of a cashier engulfs the otherwise empty eatery. The bell above the door that welcomes diners echoes and shatters silence. We greet with a smile and nod, cautious to stand our place.
Our conversation is brief and sweet, a slant of sun in darkness.

Amy Wu, J’04, is communications manager at Hudson Valley Farm Hub and the founder of From Farms to Incubators, a multimedia project focusing on the contributions of minority women entrepreneurs in agtech.
