Unsuitable living conditions in Lebanon and regional countries forces thousands of Syrian refugees to seek asylum in Europe.

Nearly around 1.2 million Syrian refugees fled to Lebanon since the beginning of the civil war in 2011 in hopes of finding a better and safer life. Most Syrian refugees are living in extreme miserable conditions and poverty, some have taken up shelter in communities’ abandoned buildings, cabins, and camp settlements around the country. The environment they’re living in is unsuitable, camps are often overcrowded, unhygienic and underfunded. Poverty and hunger have taken over their lives leading to the suffering and death of many. Due to these circumstances an increasing number of people are seeking new lives in countries beyond the immediate region. Many are embarking on long and risky journeys to reach shelter in Europe. Thus the number of refugees in Europe is now on the rise.

countries like Lebanon and Jordan “have reached their utmost limits,” which forces Syrians to seek refuge elsewhere, contributing to the tide of migrants and refugees heading to Europe.

The vast majority of Syria’s 4 million refugees reside in neighboring countries. Lebanon hosts around 1.2 million, making them a quarter of its population.

The IOM says more than 464,000 migrants and refugees from various countries have crossed the Mediterranean Sea to Europe this year, and that 2,182 died on the way.
