Facebook, Does it shape culture? Or does culture shape it?
In today’s generation, I would definitely argue that technology shapes culture. After reading the article, The Influence of Facebook, from “BBG Communications,” the author does a great job explaining how Facebook is influential in today’s society which leads me to believe that social media causes people to form opinions because of what they read online. An interesting point that was made in this article is the fact that, “We may have yet to see what the true power of Facebook holds.”
This article describes Facebook as one of the most influential social media sites. Facebook allows people to rant about their political views, post pictures of their family and friends, and complain about environmental problems. The author discusses the idea that Facebook is changing with the times in order to keep society on their toes which in return helps us to develop more quickly.
Winston’s perspective is the argument of “does culture shape technology?” or “does technology shape culture?” It was very interesting because this article perfectly sided with, technology shaping culture. “Facebook has connected the world in a way it has never been connected before. People can now see and read and listen to the creation of another in almost every part of the world.” As much as I would like to argue that culture shapes technology, because this is the way it should be, it clearly is not the case. Facebook helps people reach others from the other side of the world, and people are very easily influenced by what others have to say.
Personally, I do agree that technology shapes culture in today’s society. I know that if there are political problems in the world, then I will be informed throughout social media, like Facebook, and when I see other people posting their opinions I start to think “Wow they’re totally right,” and my views are very much shaped because of the technology in today’s society.
