Social Media and Communication
Even though some may not want to admit it, social media has definitely taken over a large percentage of the way people are able to communicate with each other.
In Millennial CEO’s article, “How Social Media Has Changed How We Communicate,” the article talks about the ways social media has affected our culture and the way we choose to use social media. The article definitely sees social media as a cultural determinist perspective rather than a technological determinist perspective.
The article makes it a point to mention the fact that it is now much easier to interact with people everywhere rather than just in our surrounding area. People are able to get their messages across a greater audience than they were before social media. Certain platforms like Twitter and Facebook allow people to spread their beliefs and messages with ease and efficiency.
People are also able to write their messages in a more concise manner. With platforms like Twitter having a character limit, people are able to get to the point that they are trying to make without any superfluous words.
Another point that the article talks about is the prevalence of abbreviations. They are used more in everyday life than they used to be, which is something that has greatly affected culture and the way people talk to each other.
Despite all of these positive points, the article also mentions the fact that many people have become dependent on social media; so much to the point of being unable to participate in a normal conversation with another person. Some people get distracted by their phones and get caught up in checking social media so often, it prevents them from having meaningful face-to-face interactions.
Even though social media is a helpful and easy platform to interact with others, it is still a controversial form of communication because of the dependency that many people develop to it.
