It’s been a strange year for me and comics, my beloved collection was safely put into storage midyear as Rachel Mercer and I moved to London. With limited space in our small London apartment, I discovered my new found appreciation for digital comics and my iPad.

Here’s a list of what I read this year:

Copra, Round One by Michael Fiffe
Fiffe’s love letter to the Suicide Squad is paired with beautifully visceral artwork. I’ve seen the future of comics and it looks like this.

Copra, Round One by Michael Fiffe

The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story by Vivek Tiwary,
Andrew C. Robinson and Kyle Baker
The tragic story of Brian Epstein and how he forever changed music.

From Hell by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell
Alan Moore, Jack the Ripper, Freemasons, conspiracy theories and 576 pages of gritty artwork by Eddie Campbell.

Hellboy: Midnight Circus by Mike Mignola and Duncan Fegredo
Young Hellboy runs away from the B.P.R.D to discover a strange circus inspired by Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes.

Hellboy in Hell by Mike Mignola
After 8 long years, Hellboy in Hell marks Mike Mignola’s return as the ongoing artist for the character and I couldn’t be happier.

Hellboy in Hell Issue #2 by Mike Mignola

Blake & Mortimer Vol. 15: The Strange Encounter by
Jean Van Hamme and Ted Benoit
TinTin meets Sherlock Holmes in this revival of Edgar P. Jacobs
famous series.

Heck by Zander Cannon
A fun yet haunting depiction of The Divine Comedy.
Thanks to Dylan Todd for the recommendation.

Heck by Zander Cannon

Final Frontier by Tom Scioli
Scioli’s innovative take on The Fantastic Four would make Jack Kirby proud. Did I mention the villain is Robot Dracula?

Prophet Vol. 1–3 by Brandon Graham, Simon Roy and many others.
This is how you reboot a series. Prophet is easily one of the most
imaginative and fun comics I’ve ever read.

Prophet Vol. 3 by Brandon Graham and Simon Roy

Garage Band by Gipi
Beautiful watercolors paired with the struggles of adolescence.
Thanks to Chris Arrant for the recommendation.

Saga Vol. 1–4 by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples
The best space soap opera you’ll ever read.

Saga Vol 3. by Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples

Seconds: A Graphic Novel by Bryan Lee O’Malley
It starts off great but I found Seconds to be the most disappointing
book I read all year.

The Multiversity: Pax Americana by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely
Morrison might be batshit crazy but his take on the Charlton Comics characters paired with impeccable panel layouts makes for the best single issue that came out all year.

The Multiversity: Pax Americana by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely

The Death of Captain Marvel by Jim Starlin
My favorite comic book store owner said this was the only book to ever make him cry, and now I understand why.

Batman: Year Zero by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo
The Riddler finally gets the definitive story that he so rightfully deserves.

Batman: Year Zero by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo

Infinity Gauntlet by Jim Starlin, George Perez and Ron Lim
256 pages about how cool Adam Warlock is, no arguments here.

Trillium by Jeff Lemire
Jeff Lemire at his best.
