A Fishing Story
Summer was approaching, and baseball was winding down. Adam and I couldn’t wait to get our minds of the game and cast our lines in the water. On our off days, we had traveled to Presque Isle to fish, but we were itching to explore more. I told Adam when the season ends he should have to come to visit me to fish. There was abandon property near my house with two massive pounds just asking to be fished. “These pounds are like a legend around my town,” I told him, without hesitation he agreed.
When the time finally came I picked up Adam and we headed to the ponds. As we pulled up to the first pond Adam began to grow nervous. Every tree had a private property sign that read “NO FISHING”. With a little bit of convincing, I told him there is no way anyone would catch us. After all, there were no major roads nearby.
Once we got to fishing and caught the first couple fish all seemed good. Adam calmed down and the ponds were holding up to their reputation. After about an hour or so we decided walked up to the second pond. But before we could get there we heard a voice coming from the distance. We couldn’t quite make out what it was saying so we just decided to move on. Do you think that was the cops?” Adam asked. “No of course not, let’s just keep fishing” I reassured him. Another hour had passed before Adam brought up the cops again. “What do you thi-“ and before he could finish we heard the sounds of a cop car was blistering nearby. This time we were both panicking. Packing up our gear and splitting from the ponds as fast as we could. From a distance, we could see the cop car parked next to my truck. So, like any rational kids might do we decide to hide.
Hiding out for what felt like hours the cop car never ended up leaving. I told Adam to stay put since it was my idea to fish on the private property. Walking up to the cop expecting the worst I was met with unusual surprise. The cop frantically asked me if I was ok. “Uhh yes sir I am fine we were just fishing.” I said confused. “Oh thank god! I had thought someone had died” he said. He explained that he had run the license plate on my car which was registered to my dad’s name. Since there is no way to drive back to the pond he had been calling out over the loudspeaker for what who thought was my dad fishing. With the intentions of just asking him to leave he grew nervous when he was met with no response. He went on to explain that the land was abandoned because it was filled with asbestos and thought my dad became ill while on the land and died. Still looking at him confused I reassured him everything was okay and it was just my friend with me. Happy to hear nothing had happened to my dad or either of us fishing he said he had sent another officer to my house and called my dad’s emergency contacts several times with no answer. Still looking at him stunned that he went through all of this trouble and worry with only my truck parked on the side of the road.
“Well, I’m glad to hear everything is okay…and uh… never fish here again….” He said to me as he drove off. Still standing where I was, I called Adam over to explain. Expecting to leave those pond with a fishing story we left with a story never the less.
