Father
My parents’ eyes were always on me while I was growing up. I mean what do you expect, I’m an only child. I’m not saying this as a bad thing because I am blessed to have the caring and loving parents I do. They are easily the most important people in my life. With that being said sorry Mum, if you happen to be reading this one just happens to be about Dad.
My dad is a candidate for “Best dad of the year” every year. This is not some clique t-shirt award that’s given on fathers-day this is really how much of an inspiration he is. So much so that I was able to vote in the last election and instead of voting for big party candidate I chose to write in-vote my Dads name.
What sticks out the most for me is the small things my dad does. He does basic things dads and then some. In high school, baseball practice in the winter was at 5 am before school. Dreading the 4:30 am alarm clock all week the first practice rolled around on a Monday. Crawling out of my bed and making down the steps I was caught by surprise when I saw my dad downstairs already had food ready for me. He did not have to be up for work till 6:30 but he was already up to make sure I had food before my practice. Even after that he cleaned the snow off my car and started it, so it would before I left. For the whole month of February, he would wake up for work early 3 days awake to make sure everything was set for me before I left for morning practice. My friends would tell me their parents wouldn’t even wake up to make sure they left or even made it practice fine. That when it really hit me how lucky I had it
Now it’s not just this specific instance in life that makes his so important and such an inspiration to me. In 15 years of baseball, my Dad hasn’t missed a single game. My Dad has always been willing to go above and beyond. Not just for me but my mum too. He’s taught me that in that the smallest gestures of kindness can go the longest way.
