Number 1 fan to Best Friend

Nabila Tapia is a reality TV star from the Hispanic network Univision, and on June 7th, 2014 she became one of the most important human beings in my life. On December 18th, 2013, she became one of the finalist in the show Nuestra Belleza Latina (Our Latin Beauty). This was a reality show in which 12 girls were put in a mansion for 3 months with no connection with the outside world, no social media and no phone calls. They competed each week for a spot in the grand finale. Each week one of these girls were eliminated until there were only 4 left. I was always a huge fan of Nabila and would stay up super late just to vote for her, to make sure she had the spot she wanted so bad in the finale.

I remember seeing her brother in law on Twitter and I messaged him asking “are you Nabila’s brother in law?” of course I already knew the answer, but I just wanted to make conversation. He told me that it would be a pleasure to introduce me to her one day, because he saw how much I admired her without even knowing her. We exchanged numbers and I told him that if she ever needed anything it would be my pleasure to help.

May 18th, 2014, the grand finale.

Unfortunately, Nabila did not win, receiving third place in the competition. I remember crying because even though this girl was not someone I knew personally I wanted her to win so bad. I wanted her to achieve her dreams and become the winner of that year, I wanted her to become a huge star and for her to have the opportunity to show the world her talent, that she isn’t just a beautiful face but also a fighter, dreamer and believer.

May 19th, 2014, the call.

I was getting ready for bed when my phone started to ring, it was an unknown number but I still picked it up and it was Nabila’s brother in law, Richard. “Hi Michael, I’m with Nabila. I’m going to put her on the phone so you can speak to her” He said. My mind went completely blank once I heard her voice. We were on the phone for about 15 minutes and all I remember was when she said “When I get to New York I want to meet you”. It was one of the best feeling in the world that one of my idols told me that they wanted to meet you.

June 7th, 2014, I met Nabila.

I recieved a text message saying “Meet us at La Casa del Mofongo (a Dominican restaurant in Washighton Heights) tonight!” I didn't questoin it and started to get ready. Once I got to the restauraunt I remember seeing a white car coming my way, and it was them. The first one I saw was Nabila and I waved at her. Her brother came out the car and told me “It is nice to meet you” and introduced me to Nabila. My hands could not stop shaking and the words would not come out my mouth. She gave me a huge hug like if she were to know me her whole life. We had dinner, took pictures and chatted the whole night.

As the years went by, we became closer and closer, and we became best friends. I do not regret becoming such a huge fan of this girl because so many things have changed in my life because of her. I have met so many people that I never thought I would meet in my life. Her family has became my family and my family has became her family. In many ocasions I stop myself and think how crazy life is and that we should never take anyone for granted because there is a reason why people come into our lives, even if it just for a few.

When it comes to the public figure industry, I have learned so much from her as she has also learned so much from me. Im glad I can call her my bestfriend and now my boss, as I recently also became her Social Media Assistant. I know that together we will succeed and achieve our dreams.

This past summer, I spent 2 months with her in the Dominican Republic and the story of how we met would always come up, because it is such a weird and crazy story, but also a wonderful one. The love I have for this woman is unconditional, and it will never change. I cannot visualize my world without her in it.
