Abortion because of rape blocked

When I took the Political Compass test my results gave me -2.38 on the Economic Left/Right, and an 1.18 on the Social Libertarian/Authoritarian. On the 8values my results gave me I’m a Centrist. Centrist’s stand on middle ground when it comes to government control, and emphasize “practical” solutions to problems. With these results I then looked up a news report using these views and critiqued that perspective.

In a Los Angeles Times article by David G. Savage, Trump administration’s refugee resettlement program tried to prevent a 17-year-old refugee rape victim from having an abortion. He explains anti-abortion policies always usually have an exception for rape cases, but this case was not the same. Since she was a refugee in detention she was not going to be allowed by the government to leave the detention to get the abortion. They claimed she was only 17 so she could not make that decision, they then found out she was actually 19. She then still underwent the abortion without permission of the government.

From the perspective of a Centrist they believe that abortion should be legal, but only in situations where a woman conceives during rape or if she is not financially stable to raise a baby. In the news article, the officer of the Refugee Detention refused to let the refugee have an abortion because there is no medical reason for it, it would not erase the memory from her of the violence and it may create more of a trauma. Later in the article Brigitte Amiri, an attorney for the ACLU’s Reproductive Freedom Project said, “It seeks to force women to continue pregnancies against their will.”

The officer of the Refugee Detention did not believe that it was the refugees right to choose an abortion, while Brigitte Amiri said that if a woman does not want to carry the baby of the person who sexual assaulted her then she can rightfully make that choice. Centrist’s believe that this should be taken care of in the hands of the person it effects not the government, however it should not always be an option. There are certain laws that should be broken when it is fit and ethical.
