Sports are something in America that are put up on a pedestal. The moment that sports began to pair up with media it has taken off and never looked back. Not only have people began to revolve their lives around their team, but young kids are being influenced at a young age by the antics of professional athletes. This leads me to my question that I pose to the reader in this blog, Is the way that sports are portrayed in the media inherently good for the viewers who support them?

People say that of course sports are good! It’s a great source of entertainment where people and stand up and back their favorite teams. Others say it is a great way to show kids that if you work hard and chase your dreams that great things can happen. Finally, others believe that sports not only give people hope but communities as well. Yet, I don’t believe that the sports themselves are what all these things are influenced by. The media has a complete hand on the influences that the sport industry makes. The question I pose to you as the reader is this, are these influences inherently good?

The power that the media gives to the top teams, and top players is unreal. We are talking money, we are talking free advertising, and we are talking influences. The top players of each individual sports have large followings of kids who are shaping the future society. So one could easily say that the way the media portrays these athletes, could potentially shape our future generations. This is definitely a bold statement, but one I find to be true. The way the media covers these teams and players are the way that the people believe to be true.

This is just the beginning to a very massive thesis that one could write a book on! The specific games in sports are never going to change. I mean there may be slight rule changes but the primis will always be the same. Yet America is set in the way of innovation, and constantly want to make things bigger, and better. Well if the games aren’t going to change what will? The answer to this is the way the media portrays the game. We can definitely see this in the past decade. Sports have been turn into politics, and soap operas! It’s all about how can they get they get more viewers, or followers, or even mentions! The fact is Sports are directly affected by the power of the media. The question will be left up to you. Is the way the media portrays sports inherently good?
