Trump, the Enthymeme King
As I’m sure most of us have realize Trump is the ultimate enthymeme king. The amount of times we use enthymemes in our every day lives is pretty insane. Once we realize what they are and know how to find them they are every where. In this CNN article, Trump Focuses on Law Enforcement Side of Opioid Rollout, I’m going to focus on an enthymeme he uses.
President Trump made his way to Manchester Community College on March 19th, 2018 to discuss what actions will be taken to address the opioid crisis. Trump imposes “really, really powerful penalties for really bad pushers and abusers.” The definition of an enthymeme is “an arugment in which one premises is not stated.” In Trumps statement he does not explain what he is describing but we all know exactly what he is saying. How strange. We can see that there is something wrong and there needs to be something done to fix it. Trump wants a permanent fix to the drug problem and doesn't want to sit around and just talk about the problem. Trump’s enthymemes are always plain and very basic. He doesn’t use much brain to think of them, they just kind of roll right off his tongue. Trump added “Other countries don’t play games…but the ultimate penatly has to be the death penatly.” The majority of us living in the U.S. know at least a little about our history and the news, which gives us the ability to fill in the blanks for what Trump is proclaiming. We know that other countries are not curtious when a law has been broken and they do not think twice about the penalty given to them being death. Hints “other countries don’t play games.” Trump is not messing around and we all know he is serious and that’s why using enthymemes are so successful for him.
Trump seems to use enthymes in almost every speech he gives. So the question is are they planned or is Trump’s carelessness actually getting him somewhere? Trump is not messing around, we all know he is serious and that’s why using enthymemes are so successful for him.
