You like rap? You’re gonna want to check this out.

Jung Hoseok, also known as J-Hope, is a member of popular Korean boy band, BTS. J-Hope released his first mixtape, Hope World, on March 2nd in Korea (March 1st in the US). The Music Video he released with the mixtape was for his song Daydream. The song has quickly gained popularity on American music charts as well as Korean ones. Just 4 days after the release of the Daydream MV, J-Hope released the MV for Airplane, another from the track list of Hope World.

J-Hope has been working on this mixtape for years and finally released his work. As you can see, the music video is bright and colorful. It’s full of symbolism and many things link to one another. Fans of BTS, called ARMY, are left with innumerable fan theories but there are a couple things that are agreed upon concepts.

  1. Keep daydreaming

J-Hope says he’ll keep dreaming in seemingly impossible things and working hard. The English lyrics near the end of the song read, “If I want something, that’s a daydream.” J-Hope is basically relating everything he wants to a dream and now that he’s gotten the thing he wanted so badly, he’s living in a dream. He’s living in “Hope World.”

2. Live life to the fullest

All of J-Hope’s dreams are put into the verses of the song. Verse 2: “So what? I get drunk until I go crazy. So what? I go out, don’t think about work. Let’s just feel the youth. Young, wild, and free. Wild and free. Let me give it a try. No eggshell walking, errday. I do what I want with my feelings, errday. A love-expert sniping the heart when you fall in it, errday. Work out on my desire without a formula, errday. Ignore my character, errday .Wanna cry with no shame, errday, Dream list, the first priority. With no concerns on money. Deep sleep” Being young, wild, and free without feeling anxious about anything and honestly enjoying life is all he wants.

희망 (huimang) meaning something like “Hope” in Korean.

The thing that’s great about his mixtape is that it all focuses on his dreams and experiences. It’s great because he isn’t trying to convince anyone of anything and he isn’t trying to tackle a topic of race, religion, or gender/sexuality. Maybe the fact that he isn’t speaking on those topics, is making some sort of point, in a way. In today’s times everyone is so concerned with topics like I mentioned, race, religion, etc. and it’s causing a type of stress that J-Hope seems to rather avoid. Instead he talks about what he personally wants from life, and how he wants to enjoy the world he’s living in without worry. Just having to mention, “no eggshell walking, errday,” in his dreams says something about previous situations he’s been in where he feels like he IS walking on eggshells and where he’s on edge. He wants to be free of those burdens for a time.

In my favorite part of the lyrics he says, “Like the hole Alice fell into, like the road that leads to Hogwarts, it’ll be a world of mirages and it’ll be all mine. It’ll be exactly how I imagined but it won’t last forever. Shit.” Just those lyrics explain a bit about who he is and how he sees the world and all its possibilities yet chooses the craziest adventure of a life trying to become famous, all the while acknowledging that it won’t last forever so to enjoy it in the moment. J-Hope has finally gotten success and is living happily for now in his Daydream.

Feel free to check out the airplane MV below and listen to the rest of his mixtape, as well as music from his group BTS, on Spotify.
