Have you ever imagined life in prison? The rules, guidelines, punishments, work force, and the lifestyle that is the life of a prisoner? I have been currently been watching the Netflix series, Orange is the New Black and so far I’ve noticed the gender, racial identity, and sexuality portrayed in this television show. The very first couple of episodes is definitely showing the sexuality of women liking women in a very striking way.

OITNB is full of lesbians. Which I think they made these women characters, that weren’t lesbians before they came into prison, are now lesbians in prison, or they have a lesbian fling.

The main Character Piper comes in as an engaged women to her husband. The show then digs up her past in a way that her past followed her into the prison, which was her lesbian girlfriend. The character Sophia, who is a transgender women now, struggles with keeping contact and a relationship with her son.

Not only is the title emphasized as, “Orange is the New Black”, but also emphasizes the cliques in the prison; the Latinos, blacks, whites, asians, and even the old women. I feel like the title is only indicating that black women are only seen in orange (meaning prison suits).

This show is full of a lot of controversy between the women prisoner’s and the guards. It kind of makes the women seem they are slutty and willing to do anything for some of the guards. One prisoner even fell in love with one of the guards and is carrying her baby.

I feel this show portrays a lot of arguments of the women of color and just of women in general. Sure people commit crimes, but this show seems to drag women in prison way out of proportion.
