Once again it’s time for an update to the Water Reporter Android and iOS apps! Water Reporter’s V.4 rollout is the culmination of feedback from you, the user, and our team’s hard work to build that feedback into meaningful features that unite this rapidly growing network of nonprofits, local governments, and individuals working together to explore and improve our nations waterways.

Whenever you’re submitting a report or exploring your watershed, here’s what you will discover in your app now:

“Like” Reports in the Community

Show a little love for the reports in the community that you think are outstanding! From restoration actions being taken by James River Associationto cleanups orchestrated by Pearl Riverkeeper and reports showcasing the beautiful remote lakes of the high Sierra’s, “liking” a post is a great way to show your support. If you’re getting too many “likes” on your posts you can change your notification settings in your profile settings.

Explore a Report’s Location through the Watershed View

Tapping on a watershed name from any feed will allow you to view the latest activity throughout the watershed. Android user? We have some neat new features that let you explore reports via photo map.

Share content that is important to you

Water Reporter has expanded beyond displaying point and shoot photos to also included links to web content. We recommend using this feature to share news articles about your work, encourage participation from volunteers, and share your data collected through other programs such as TheSwimGuide.Org. This is similar to creating a report but faster. Simply copy and paste a link, add a location, and we’ll take care of the rest. In fact, Water Reporter will generate a nifty preview image and share it out with the rest of the community. You can even turn around and post this content to Twitter and Facebook.

Instagram Posts now Look Great on Water Reporter!

Have an Instagram account? Want to collect your Instagram posts and Water Reporter posts in one place? You can now copy the URL from your Instagram posts and share through Water Reporter. The post in Water Reporter will continue to capture any activity that happens on Instagram while letting you compile all your relevant photos in one, manageable Water Reporter feed.

Use an Android? Explore watersheds through feed and filter views

Have an Android device? If so, when you click on a watershed you can see the boundaries of that watershed and then filter through reports collected in that watershed. This is just one more way to understand the connection between activities, communities, and our natural environment.

Update your profile and notification options

Stay up to date on activities that interest you by turning on relevant notifications. We’ve added more notification options so you can keep current with your community in ways that interest you. With more than fifty watershed organizations keeping an eye on activities across the US with Water Reporter, there are loads of reports to explore and conversations to join. You don’t have to be part of an organization to make a meaningful impact in your watershed. Share your story through photos to keep a pulse on your watershed and inspire change to improve water quality.

Turn on Water Reporter and Tune in to your Watershed

Whether you’re reporting pollution, volunteering as a digital watershed watchdog, participating in a citizen science campaign, or just celebrating your watershed, keep Water Reporter in your back pocket because it’s the front page to the watershed movement. Capturing and sharing your experiences will help us all actively engage in protecting, restoring, and celebrating all corners of our water quality quests.

Keep an eye out for more updates

There’s still more to come! Expect to see more updates for both general users and administrative account holders through the end of the year. Keep in touch! And if you have any questions, want to upgrade your account, or schedule a training webinar, reach us at support@waterreporter.org.
