The Adventures of Jefferson Sessions by Donald Trump
How the Attorney General Became the President’s New Punching Bag

On February 28, 2016, a lifetime ago it seems, Jefferson Sessions, better known as Jeff, stood next to Donald J. Trump on a stage in Madison, AL. He endorsed Trump for President to a wave of cheers and applause. An article by Politico said Sessions “was effusive in praising the GOP front-runner.” Trump and Sessions were a thing. Sessions put on Trump’s infamous red hat. Sessions was for Trump and Trump basked in the glory of the Tea Party’s darling endorsement. The first senator to endorse candidate Trump.
By May of 2016, Politico was quoting Sessions as “deeply simpatico with Trump on immigration and taxes, and he’s a fervent, if recent, convert to the developer’s opposition to all free trade agreements.” It was clear, Sessions worshiped at the altar of Trump. He berated his GOP colleagues and told them they “needed to adapt to Trump or die.” It didn’t matter what Donald Trump’s moral or character failings were, Jeff Sessions made his bed and he intended to sleep in it.
As Trump’s rocky summer piled on the heat from the GOP establishment, Jeff Sessions was loyal. NPR stated:
A lot has been said about the difficulty Donald Trump has had getting the Republican establishment behind him. But one man has always backed him in the Senate: Republican Jeff Sessions of Alabama.
Above all else, we know Trump cherishes loyalty and Sessions had heaps of it. He didn’t back away from the candidate when he made fun of John McCain or when he made fun of a reporter with disabilities. He saw the light and now golden shower was going to keep him from it.
In October Sessions was spinning and giving context to Trump’s words. When Trump said he might not accept the election results, Sessions said, “One thing that Donald Trump means is, he doesn’t intend to be cheated or taken advantage of.” Also, in October Sessions defending Trump’s “locker room” conversations and actions.
“I don’t characterize that as sexual assault.” Jeff Sessions 10/10/16
It was clear, Jeff Sessions had Donal Trumps back. He was his buddy. His warrior at arms against the biased media. He was the defender of American values alongside the only candidate that accurately reflected those values, Donald Trump.
Trump became President of the United States.
And Donald Trump rewarded Session’s loyalty. Trump nominated Sessions for Attorney General of the United States of America. Sessions knew he had a hard battle ahead during the confirmation but, then again, his Republican counterparts in the Senate made sure that his past sins were properly placed in context: the past. Sessions was confirmed. He became the nation’s Attorney General and Trump
Everything was peachy. Trump loved his new attorney general. He would have his back indefinitely.
Then Russia started popping up, well, the mainstream media finally started noticing. Reports surfaced that Sessions had lied during his Senate confirmation. He had indeed met with Russians. CNN headlines read in March of 2017 “Sessions did not disclose meetings with Russian ambassador.” Republicans and Democrats called for Sessions’ recusal. Originally, Mr. Sessions pushed back but finally on March 2 Sessions put out a statement, “I have decided to recuse myself from any existing or future investigations of any matters related in any way to the campaigns for president of the United States.” This included Russia.
Wait, what? Trump does a double take. And it is all down hill from there for the Trump-Sessions bromance.
Trump does not accept Sessions’ reasoning for recusal. He believes people he appointed should be loyal to him above country, law, or standards. Sessions’ committed a cardinal sin in the Trump world. He put himself or law before Trump’s interest. In other words, they were done. Like many relationships, it only lasted a year. Ever since then there have been recriminations and awkward meetings. If reports are to be believed, Trumps has been fuming about Sessions’ recusal ever since Sessions announced it.
However, Trump has now gone public with it.
After a report surfaced in June ABC’s timeline stated, “ABC News learns that Sessions had recently offered to resign as Trump continued to express frustration with the attorney general’s decision to recuse himself from the election-tampering investigation.”
It gets worse, in an interview with The New York Times Trump stated, “Sessions should have never recused himself, and if he was going to recuse himself, he should have told me before he took the job, and I would have picked somebody else.”
As if that was not bad enough, Trump then attacks Sessions on Twitter.
But Trump is not done, though. This morning he tweeted.
Clearly, Trump is not pleased with his Attorney General. The problem is that Jeff Sessions comes with a large backing from the people who put Trump in office. Does he fire them and alienate them? Are those people more important than Trump’s own interest?
As Jeff Sessions adventures had taught us, it doesn't matter how loyal you are to Donald Trump. Trump loves loyalty. It is incredibly important to him but the reality is that when it comes to loyalty, for Trump, it is a one-way street. Once your interests clash with Trump’s interest, he will look out for the only person that matters: Trump.
