[#44. IoT based shared parking service]
The city of Seoul announced that a project called Green Parking which has been run by the city of Seoul will evolve one step further by introducing a real-time shared parking system using IoT (Internet of Things) technology starting from this year.
Since 2004, the Green Parking project has destroyed fences of residential areas to make space for each householder’s own parking lot. Until 2018, a total of 55,381 parking lots were made in the city through the project and feedback from residents who secured the parking lots were positive.
The main purpose of the project was to secure parking spaces in the meantime, but the future goal of the project with IoT technology is to share parking spaces with others so that residents can earn extra income and to improve parking difficulties.
The IoT based real-time shared parking system will be managed by attaching IoT sensors to the floors of the parking lots. This sensor is able to detect the presence of vehicles in real time. Users can use a private shared parking app to check the parking area around them and make reservations and payments at once. Shareable times can be set by the owner of the parking lot through the app.
In this regard, the city of Seoul recruits citizens who want to participate in the real-time shared parking system through their respective regions. The selected householders are able to receive the full support of installing the sensors.
Participation is not only for those who are already part of the Green Parking project. Any new or interested citizen may apply to be part of this new project.
The city of Seoul expects the project to not only improve parking difficulties but also contribute to foster a sense of community between neighbors that have been blocked by fences and to build a parking lot sharing culture.
According to the ‘2018 Awareness Survey on Sharing Urban Policy’ conducted by the city of Seoul, ‘shared parking lot business’ was selected as the project that citizens were most interested in participating in the future.
Hong Seok Ko, chief of urban transportation for the city of Seoul, said that “the IoT based Green Parking project is expected to increase the convenience for citizens by utilizing parking spaces efficiently.”
