The first rule of Book Club is: you talk all about your favorite books! And with it being National Read Across America Day, we thought we’d ask the Moncur team what books they read over and over. Dog-ear this post to come back to—there are some great books to check out, and we’ve provided the links to find them on Amazon.

Feed, by M. T. Anderson

Feed makes me feel utterly terrible and, as far as I’m concerned, any book that can unnerve you is worthwhile. The novel focuses on corporate power, consumerism, data mining, and environmental decay–so to say that it’s relevant to our generation is an understatement. It’s a quick read and I recommend it to all. Oh, and it’s one of very few books that I believe is better as an audio book–BUT you should definitely READ it before you hear it.

Neuromancer, by William Gibson

Gibson’s novels, Neuromancer in particular, seem prescient. Or, is it that we consciously or subconsciously shape our world to reflect the best, or more often than not — worst, ideas from science fiction? Nothing particularly profound there, I will admit. In fact, it is one of the core components of most science fiction, but it holds especially true for the cyberpunk genre and it is what I love most about Gibson’s work.

Good to Great, by Jim Collins

This is one of my favorite books. It educates and inspires you to be the best business leader you can be, which can transform a good business into a great one.

Angels & Demons, by Dan Brown

My all time favorite book is Angels & Demons. It is thrilling, clever, romantic — an on the edge of your seat mystery with incredible writing and storytelling. I even did an Angels & Demons tour to see the different churches featured in the book when I was vacationing Italy.

Wild, by Cheryl Strayed

Wild is one of my favorite books. Life is about the journey.

Everyone Poops, by Taro Gomi

It was a favorite of mine as a child and now is a favorite of my son’s. I guess I love it for the nostalgia behind it. Additionally, I like the simple illustration work and bright poppy colors.

Kitchen Confidential, by Anthony Bourdain

This book is an unapologetic insight to a fascinating world of the people that make up the restaurant industry. Anthony is a great storyteller, and offers invaluable insight on things to avoid when eating out.

Secret of the Sirens, by Julia Golding

This quartet has a little bit of everything: mythological creatures, adventure, and romance. They’re quick reads and perfect for young readers. Plus, they aren’t super popular, so the give a “hipster”, I-liked-it-before-it-was-cool vibe.

The Tipping Point, by Malcolm Gladwell

I’m not one to read a book twice, but I do often go back to the same author: Malcolm Gladwell. The first book I read of his, The Tipping Point, simply fascinated me. In it, he explores the tipping point phenomenon—when something (an idea, product, trend, etc.) generates so much traction it becomes seemingly contagious. Despite being educational, his writing style makes it a fun read as he provides incredibly detailed and interesting social and psychological cases to make his point.
