Expressive Squares
For the second assignment of Communication Design Class, Fall 2016, we were asked to use black squares and nothing else to express five words: playfulness, comfort, tension, congestion and order. I started off using pencil to sketch out some basic idea for each one of them; and then develop on this idea with different variation in multiple iteration. Then we used markers to move the sketches into a higher fidelity.
After the first round of critique and feedback, we picked one piece for each one of the words and digitalize them using Illustrator. This gave me more flexibility on doing a large amount of iteration on one idea without wasting too much time sketching on paper. In During this process, more and more ideas came to mind; however, these ideas didn’t have a unifying concept behind all of them to make them into a series.
With Saumya’s feedback on some of the digital pieces, I decided to unify all the pieces with a single concept to make all the pieces into an unifying series.
