In this project, we created bound books consisting of 12 to 16 pages (6 or more spreads) on any topic. The purpose was to incorporate elements from all previous projects, including typography, placement, grids, etc, and combine said elements into a singular piece. I decided to create my book on Taeyeon — specifically, her song Rain, which has helped greatly throughout the years in de-stressing.

I chose this topic partly because I had already sketched a picture of her prior to the beginning of this project, shown below.

Taeyeon sketch

I decided to continue the book by introducing my purpose, the author, and the song itself. I drew an addition sketch of Taeyeon to help increase the amount of visuals, and to keep the reader from being bored. The four spreads I created are below.

The font I used throughout the book was Raleway, a sans serif typeface which I thought helped create a more modern and lighter feel, increasing readability and sleekness .

I proceeded to continue by sketching the rest of the book — as shown here. Each took about two hours to sketch, and another two to shade.

The sketches together.

I used these sketches to simultaneously visualize parts of the music video as well as convey the feelings I experienced while listening to this song. I incorporated quotes from the song (in Korean) to create a more sophisticated atmosphere, while adding singular adjectives of the feelings I experienced.

The three spreads are as shown above.

I finalized the book by establishing the cover and the back page, making variations based off of the song’s logo as well as small changes to the word Rain itself.

I used a normal binding style by poking three evenly spaced holes on the spine and tying the book together with a thread and needle.

I learned a great deal from this project — how to efficiently use the pen tool, how to use grids, and how to bind a book, and how to effectively put various elements of communication design together to create a coherent piece.
