Identifying Communication Design

Effective Design

This wrapper has a well thought out and targeted design to attract consumers and illustrate the product within. The bright red against the otherwise neutral tones on the package help emphasize key information including the CLIF bar logo, climbing figure, and the organic label. The thick black lines around the figure, logo, and foreground creates a clear space that is set in the background, which gives depth to an otherwise flat graphic.

Ineffective Design

The package above has an effective image and well thought out design, however the information is not distributed in an accessible way. The nutritional content of the food is displayed clearly on the front, but the moment the package is opened the information is no longer legible. The directions below it suggest that the designer was aware there would be a mark through the packaging, and still placed information in that area. This may have been done on purpose to distract away from the nutritional information.
