A3: Type Exercises
Exercise 3: Typeface Tracing
The following fonts were traced by hand: Adobe Garamond, Didot, Helvetica, and Futura.
Exercise 4: Typographic Voice
A list of words were to be embodied by a specific typeface: tradition, purity, future, supreme, trust.
Times New Roman
The typeface Times New Roman was designed during the great depression in England for a newspaper, The Times. Microsoft’s adoption of Times New Roman and its ubiquity in early education in the United States are why I have used it to represent “tradition”.
Helvetica
Developed in 1957, Helvetica is one of the most well used and known typefaces in the world. Helvetica’s simplicity, neutrality, and logical angling of its terminals is why I believe it represents “purity”.
Roboto
One of Google’s typefaces, Roboto has a modern, futuristic feel without being over the top. While having been accused of being a Helvetica rip-off, Roboto represents the future with it’s style and accessibility.
Bodoni 72
Bodoni was heavily inspired by both Didot and Baskerville and has often been used in the fashion world. The stylish contrast within each letter is characteristic of the class and luxury associated with the word “supreme”.
Univers LT Std
Univers’s avoidance of strict geometry and sense of warmth are clearly associated with the word “trust”. A humanist typeface, Univers was revolutionary in its vast range of weights and widths.
Exercise 5: Typographic Hierarchy
The task was to format type in 2 different ways given several restrictions.
Typographic weights
Select any two weights (Helvetica Neue light, roman, medium, bold).
Set all the type in a combination of those two weights.
For your option 2, explore all four weights in combination.
No linespacing.
Typographic weight & linespacing
Select any two weights (Helvetica Neue light, roman, medium, bold).
Insert one full linespace between lines of type of your choice.
You may not insert more (or less) than one full linespace between any two lines of type.
Typographic weights & horizontal shift
Select any two weights (Helvetic Neue a light, roman, medium, bold).
Shift lines of type horizontally left or right, resulting in only two flush-left margins.
No linespacing.
Horizontal shift & linespacing
Select one weight (Helvetica Neue light, roman, medium, bold).
Insert one full linespace between lines of type of your choice.
Shift lines of type horizontally left or right, resulting in only two flush-left margins.
