Exercise 1: Typeface Tracing

Exercise 2: Typographic Voice

Purity

For “purity” I decided to use a simple and clean typeface to emphasize the clarity element often associated to the word. Catia Symbols

Rebellion

For “rebellion” I used a typeface often associated with the ARMY, it hints toughness, and the boldness of the typeface establishes a sense of resistance.
Stencil Std Bold

Organic

For “organic” I was thinking about organic food in particular and wanted to the typeface to represent elements of nature, pure yet embodying aspects of the country.
Mathcad Unimath Prime

Future

For “future” i associated the word with technology. I chose this typeface because of its clean body and sharp edges. The roundness of the letters is squared off slightly to give a colder feel to the characters.

Melancholy

For “melancholy” I wanted to use a dull typeface to emphasize the feeling of gloom. There is a sense of glumness to the typeface that I thought was appropriate for this word.

Type and Hierarchy

Typeface: Avenir
Typeface designer
: Adrian Frutiger
Year designed: released 1988. by Linotype GmbH
Identifiable features: Avenir takes inspiration from the geometric style of sans-serif typeface developed in the 1920s that took the circle as a basis. Frutiger intended Avenir to be a more organic interpretation of the geometric style.
Quotes: The word avenir is French for “future”.
Frutiger has described Avenir as his finest work. “The quality of the draughtsmanship — rather than the intellectual idea behind it — is my masterpiece. It was the hardest typeface I have worked on in my life. Working on it, I always had human nature in mind. And what’s crucial is that I developed the typeface alone, in peace and quiet — no drafting assistants, no-one was there. My personality is stamped upon it. I’m proud that I was able to create Avenir”
