Effective Design: Agapé Flyer

Effective: This poster for the campus Christian Fellowship organization, Agapé, is an example of good communication designs for several reasons. First, the bright yellow is very effective in drawing any passerby’s attention amidst the more common grey tone or muted posters that surrounds it. Next, the organization has employed a distinctive logo. It is one that I have seen previously and instantly recognized when browsing the bulletin board. The poster is advertising two different events, and the spacing and text positioning is clear in differentiating the information for the two. The font variation between the bold darker text and lighter text works to distinguish between the important information and the secondary details. All the components work well together to achieve its intended purpose.

Ineffective Design: Advertisement for a “Horoteka Dance Party”

Ineffective: This poster for a “Horoteka Dance Party” is a piece of ineffective communication designs. Aside from the lack of crucial content (the term “Horoteka” is not explained anywhere on the poster), the poster’s first mistake is the poor use of the space. The concentrated text at the center of the poster does not do well to balance out all the unused white space. At first glance, the text is pretty much the same font, size, and color. This makes it hard for the viewer to identify and retain the important information, and it is very easy to just gloss over all the text. The only two graphics that break up the sameness of the text are at an insignificant scale compared to the entire poster and do little to add to the design. All in all, this poster could use some improvements to better convey its purpose.
