Project 3: Typeface Research

Didot

Didot is the name for any of the typefaces made by a famous French printing and type making family by the name of Didot. Many of the famous Didot typefaces were made throughout 1784–1811. Firmin Didot developed the typefaces and his brother, Pierre Didot used them in his printing.

The Didot typeface is known for its high contrast and hairline serifs along with tall ascenders and descenders and a vertical axis. In a survey to determine which fonts felt as though they were the most “expensive”, found that people found Didot to be the most expensive looking font in the world.

For this reason, it’s no surprise that high class luxury items consistently use the Didot font in their branding. One of its most iconic uses today is on Vogue Magazine’s cover title.
